Plugging in an IPOD and playing a playlist is not a good idea if you want your guests to have a good time. Having interaction with a DJ is something that you can not compare. People might come up to you and ask you to play something else. It is not east to predict the mood of the people at the party. It takes the right timing to play the right song at the right time. For instance ou can play a song like Uptown Funk that has been packing the floor too early and then people can become bored very quickly after you play that song. It is better to have a DJ there to take the request and to read the crowd.
It depends on what kind of event it is for. First off, you are not only hiring a DJ but, you are renting their equipment too. People might not realize it takes time to pack the vehicle drive it all the way to the event and then set up and after the event pack up all the equipment take it back home and then put it inside. It can be 3 to 4 hours of work just doing that depending on how long the drive is. Some events require a lot of planning like for an instance a Wedding can take a lot of planning verses the little planning it will take to play in a night club. What else comes into play is how big the venue is because a larger venue is going to require bigger equipment. The amount of people come into play as well for how big the equipment would have to be. The more people means more chatter and the more chatter will require bigger equipment to be loud enough to not have to be screaming in peoples ears. You want the volume to be even all over the room. This is all stuff that has to be done before too so, a DJ should be there at least two hours ahead to check the sound and everything else out. No event is the same and the DJ has to adapt and setup to wherever they are playing. Before a DJ gives you an answer please consider all of the work and that you are renting the equipment as well as hiring the DJ to work for you when they give you an answer of how much they charge.
